DMX was sent to jail 30 times for various offenses which include robbery, assault, carjacking, drug possession, cruel behavior over animals , reckless driving, driving under the influence, unlicensed driving, probation violation, tax evasion, failure to pay child support and pretending to be a federal agent.
DMX revealed that he became addicted to crack cocaine since he was 14 years old after his friend Ready Ron tricked him to smoke a marijuana cigarette laced with a drug without his knowledge . He also said that he was suffering from bipolar disorder in an interview.
Simmons entered drug rehabilitation centers several times including in 2002, 2017, and 2019, when he cancelled concerts for health issues.
DMX has reportedly lost functionality in multiple essential organs, reportedly his lungs, liver and kidneys on the morning of April 9 , 2021 . DMX was later reported dead the same day at the age of 50 . It was reported on July 8 by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office that DMX’s official cause of death was heart attack caused by over – consumption of cocaine
Legacy
DMX’s funeral (“DMX’s Homegoing Celebration”) took place in Brooklyn on April 25, 2021 at the Christian Cultural Center. It was livestreamed on the BET Network Channel and its YouTube channel. The ceremony lasted for five hours to a limited capacity of over 2,000 members. DMX’s casket was in red color and the word “FAITH” was written on it in very big printing. It was placed in the front of the ceremony. Some of the famous people have attended the ceremony including Nas, Lil Kim, Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys as well as the pastor of the church has attended the ceremony. Louis Farrakhan who is known as a leader of the Nation of Islam religion also joined the ceremony through zoom meeting.
Various celebrities paid tribute through social media platforms including the famous former NFL player Torrey Smith, LeBron James, Eminem, Shaquille O’Neal, Gabrielle Union (who starred with DMX in the 2003 film named Cradle 2 -the Grave along with Jet Li (famous marital artist who also payed tribute ), Swizz Beatz (who DMX collaborated with including on the hit single, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem“), Missy and Eve Elliott. DMX was hailed as one of the famous rappers of all time and he influenced many young musicians till date.
