Keith Edward Elam, famously known by his stage name ‘Guru‘  was born on 17th July 1961 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, U.S  .Guru was  48 years old  by the time of death (April 19, 2010) .Guru’s father, Harry worked as a Judge and his mother , Barbara worked as the co-director of libraries in Boston Public Schools system. Guru had  attended the Advent School on Beacon Hill in Boston, Cohasset , High School in Cohasset, Massachusetts Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts during his high school days. Guru  graduated with a degree in business administration from Morehouse College in Atlanta  and later he pursued  classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan.

Guru began his music career under the name MC Keithy E but later adopted his stage name  Guru. Guru  founded famous rap duo Gang Starr in 1987. The band released three records which were  barely successful and brought them fame . After a change in line-up, the group had rapper Guru and producer DJ Premier .

Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Vol. 3: Streetsoul was the most successful album in Guru’s career which has achieved  #32 rank in Billboard 200 chart.

Guru’s first solo music  album is not a part of the Jazzmatazz series. Baldhead Slick & da Click, his first music album that  was released in 2001, opened up to poor reviews but later achieved positive reviews from all sections of the audience.  The album went on  to secure  #22 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop album charts

Guru went into cardiac arrest on February 28 , 2010 .Guru fell into coma state after a surgery . It was reported  that Guru had briefly awakened from his coma but died on April 19, 2010 from multiple myeloma which was a form of blood cancer when he was 48 years old.

Guru  has influenced the hip-hop and jazz world so much that The French city of Montpellier named a small street “Allée Guru” after the rapper’s name to give him a tribute.
